Leeds United: Former flop Vurnon Anita enjoying life at RKC Waalwijk - Leeds United

Former Leeds United man Vurnon Anita has said his footballing career is not over after leaving Elland Road.

The Netherlands midfielder spent two seasons with the Yorkshire club after joining from Newcastle United in 2017 under the guidance of Thomas Christiansen.

During his rather disastrous time with the Whites, Anita made 22 appearances, having had spells away from the club with Willem II before leaving in September 2019.

Struggling with an initial ankle injury at Leeds, Anita would eventually mutually terminate his contract at the club.

After a short spell with CSKA Sofia, the Dutchman is now back in his homeland with RKC Waalwijk, where he is currently on a one-year contract and he has now opened up about his immediate future in football.

What has Anita said about his footballing future?

“I’m happy to be here and with the philosophy of the way we play,” the 31-year-old told Chronicle Live.

“Although we play to stay in the Eredivisie, our way of playing is with good football.

“I’m one of the older players in the team and I like to help younger team-mates to develop themselves and grow as a person and a footballer.

“I’m 31 and definitely not done in football. I hope that I can extend my career as long as I can. If that is with RKC or another team, I don’t know. But now is the main focus to stay with RKC in the Eredivisie.”

Could life had been different for Anita at Leeds?

Once valued at £7.65m by Transfermarkt, it is fairly obvious that Anita had some impact and quality whilst in the English game, but that came with Newcastle and not Leeds.

With the rise of Kalvin Phillips at Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival, Anita was barely going to get a sniff in the starting eleven at Elland Road, especially as the latter begun to develop a squad that has gone on to gain promotion to the Premier League.

After a short spell with CSKA Sofia, his time back in the Netherlands should now be the perfect place for him to enjoy the remaining years of his career.
