Leicester City could be set to smash their transfer record for the second time this season, with a £45million deal edging closer for Brighton’s centre-half Lewis Dunk.
Leicester broke their transfer record earlier this summer with a move for Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans from AS Monaco, for a reported £40million.
Brighton-born Lewis Dunk has been at the club since he was a youth player, overseeing two promotions to get them to the Premier League. In total, he has started 237 times for the seaside club, and was capped by England last November.
In comparison, Dunk actually had many better figures than Maguire last year. According to WhoScored, he averaged more tackles (1.2 per game to 1), interceptions (1.3 compared to 1.1), clearances (5.4 per game compared to 4.5) and blocks (1.1 to 0.6) than Maguire, while the latter won more offsides (0.8 to 0.3) and had fewer players dribble past him (0.2 per game compared to 0.6).
Considering this, he would fit the bill of replacing Harry Maguire – another towering centre-back.
Pundit and ex-Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp clearly rates the Brighton defender, as he suggested in May that he would a good fit for Arsenal and exactly what they need. He told The Daily Mail: “Brighton’s Lewis Dunk defended like a warrior and would be an upgrade on any of the centre halves at the Emirates.
“He may not be the most easy on the eye but he just loves the art of defending.
“He is exactly what this Arsenal team needs.”
For £45million, Lewis Dunk is a remarkable outlay. However, you can see him being an ideal replacement for Maguire judging by his defensive statistics.
With potentially £80million coming to the club for the sale of Maguire, there isn’t much reason to compromise with their targets, as it’s important they get the player they want.
They will miss the ball-carrying ability of Maguire which can cause a lot of disruption to other sides; however, they will be getting another player who is defensively capable. Indeed, with the kind of attacking firepower Brendan Rodgers has at his disposal at the King Power Stadium, Dunk could help form the kind of rearguard needed for them to flourish.
