Leicester midfielder Nampalys Mendy is attracting interest from French club Saint-Etienne, according to French publication En Vert et Contre Tous.
The 27-year-old has been at the club since 2016 and was bought for an undisclosed fee. The player came the season following Leicester winning the league and was generally considered as an N’Golo Kante replacement.
“His [Mendy] signing would be an excellent place to start in the midfield rebuild,” FourFourTwo wrote following Kante’s departure.
The midfielder struggled for game time at Leicester in his first few seasons (made just four league appearances in debut campaign via Transfermarkt), but after a good loan spell back at his former club Nice, he was drafted back in the side under Claude Puel.
There is no surprise that teams are sniffing around Nampalys Mendy after he had a good season last year before falling out of favour when a change of management came into place (failed to make a single start under Brendan Rodgers).
Mendy, however, still managed to play in 31 games in total, starting 23 – suggesting that he’s a trusted enough player at this level.
From Leicester’s perspective right now, though, he does not look to be up to their required standard.
If Rodgers was to keep playing James Maddison and Youri Tielemans, Mendy may not be the best defensive option to provide them cover based on stats. Defensively Wilfred Ndidi’s numbers are much better, averaging 3.8 tackles per game to 1.1, 2.2 interceptions per game versus 0.8 and also averaging a lot more clearances with 2.1 to 0.7, according to WhoScored. Indeed, as a result, perhaps his first-team chances would continue to be limited under Rodgers.
With Ndidi in their ranks, Nampalys Mendy should be allowed to go if Leicester can recuperate around the £10million they paid for him.
Leicester also have up and coming midfielder Hamza Choudhury and Daniel Amartey available at their disposal, so they shouldn’t feel too bad about losing him if they can blood through their younger talent.
