Leicester: Fans react to Harry Maguire departure

Many Leicester City fans have responded on Twitter now that Harry Maguire has finally left the club.

The centre-back joined Manchester United in what is the world record fee for a defender, costing an alleged £80m (BBC) – £5m more than what Virgil van Dijk cost in January 2018.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to the club all summer and he has now made his move with only two days before the window expires.

This leaves Leicester City with four viable centre-back options. 31-year-old Jonny Evans, who played 24 games last season; Wes Morgan, 35, who played 22 times; Caglar Soyuncu, 23, who played just six games and Filip Benkovic, who spent last season on loan at Celtic.

Despite reports from Sky Sports News’ Rob Dorsett in July saying that Leicester do not have any plans to replace Maguire, the club have been linked with a number of moves before the window slams shut on Thursday.

It’s suggested that Leicester fancied Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake, but with only a few days before the window shuts the Cherries have said it will cost them £75m if they want the Dutch international (Leicestershire Live). Alternatively, the news outlet has also linked James Tarkowski from Burnley as well as Djene Dakonam from Getafe.

Whoever they get, there is no doubt they will be missing a player of great quality. The Sheffield-born defender went on to play 69 league games for the club, chipping in with five league goals.

When the club announced the move on Twitter, there was a varied response from Leicester fans. Memes and responses flooded in from fans, with many absolutely delighted that they have made the world-record fee off the defender, while a few pessimists lamented the defender, with one even calling him a “money grabber”.
