Following the sale of star centre-back Harry Maguire, Leicester will now turn to James Tarkowski to try and replace him, reports suggest.
Sky Sports reports that Tarkowski is one of a number of targets for Leicester, which also includes Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake, though a move for the latter is now unlikely after the Cherries slapped a reported £75m plus price tag on his head.
It’s claimed that Leicester have held informal conversations about the player after Maguire was sold for a world record fee for a defender.
Reports now suggest that Rodgers wants to sign a replacement as soon as possible for the England defender; however, they will not be forced into a transfer and have a concern that there is not enough well-valued replacements in the current market.
The 26-year-old has a £50m release clause in his contract at Turf Moor, but it is unclear whether or not Burnley would take less than that.
Even though Tarkowski currently plays in a side which plays very direct football (something they have been criticised for in the past, as highlighted by the Burnley Express), he has good ability on the ball, as shown from his time at Brentford.
In an interview with Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian, he says “Maybe some of you have written that I’m an old-fashioned English defender but before I joined Burnley so no one ever said those words about me.
“I was more a ball-playing centre-half, playing out from the back in a Brentford team that took a lot of chances.”
And right he was. When he plays for England and when he played for Brentford, he has been lauded for his ability to pass – Southgate here specifically praises him for his comfortableness on the ball.
Tarkowski would be good business for Leicester as they will be getting a 26-year-old who has shown he can operate as a more modern-day central defender.
Tarkowski has always shined with every step up he has asked to take so far in his career, whether that is with England or Burnley, so you can’t see why he couldn’t step his game up for Leicester.
The biggest problem for Leicester is how much he will cost. Rodgers has already spoken of how clubs will be expecting inflated fees after they received the Maguire money and how Leicester won’t be entertaining the idea of overpaying for someone. That might be a problem if Burnley want their transfer release clause met.
