The Leicester City fans in the Transfer Tavern are becoming increasingly concerned by rumours linking Harry Maguire with a move away from the club, but many are beginning to prepare themselves for his inevitable departure.
Harry Maguire has been one of the Foxes standout performers of the season since he joined the club from Hull City last summer and unsurprisingly his form has attracted interest from rival clubs according to the Daily Star. According to the report Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are all interested in signing the 25-year-old centre-back this summer in a bid to bolster their defensive options.
The interest which Maguire is commanding is hardly surprising considering the consistency of his performances so far this season, but Claude Puel will certainly be reluctant to allow one of his star players to leave in the summer. But regardless of Puel’s attitude towards Maguire’s future, a potential transfer may well be out of his hands this summer if one of the aforementioned teams are willing to meet Leicester’s valuation.
If that proves to be the case, then Puel will need to sign a replacement to ensure his side continue to improve next season and, one player that should certainly be on his shortlist is Newcastle United’s Jamaal Lascelles (valued at £6.3 million by Transfermarkt). The Magpies captain has been one of the most consistent centre-backs in the Premier League this season and, his performances have played an integral role in enabling Newcastle to steer clear of a relegation battle this season.
Physically Lascelles is a commanding unit with a leaders mentality and an intelligent defensive brain, so there’s no doubt he would be a worthy replacement for Maguire. Much to the dismay of the Newcastle supporters propping up our bar, Lascelles has not been selected for international duty so far this season, but if he continues to perform in the same vein there’s no doubt that will change in the future.
Newcastle will certainly be reluctant to sell Lascelles considering his importance to the club, but the funds Leicester would accumulate from Maguire’s sale would lend them the financial power to prise him away from Tyneside.
In an ideal world Leicester will be able to persuade Maguire to remain at the King Power this summer, but with plenty of heavyweight clubs in the running for his signature he may be persuaded to embark on a new challenge next season and, if that proves to the case then the Foxes should do everything they can to replace him with Lascelles.
