Leicester City supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the rest of the summer transfer window, what with their team eyeing up additions that can take them to the next level in the Premier League.
Claude Puel’s men finished ninth in the top-flight this time round with 47 points from their 38 league games, although their form in 2018 was far from impressive, to the point that several of our resident Foxes supporters were getting increasingly frustrated with the Frenchman. However, victory over Arsenal and a spirited display at Tottenham may have bought Puel some time, although he’ll be expected to make shrewd signings this summer in a bid to take Leicester towards the European spots next time round.
Yet one man who could be on his way out of the King Power Stadium this summer is striker Jamie Vardy, who has reportedly been linked with a move to Europa League winners Atletico Madrid.
And while his departure would not be well received by our resident Leicester fans, it could well serve as great news for £19.8 million-rated striker Islam Slimani (as per Transfermarkt) in his bid to salvage his Foxes career.
Ultimately, the 29-year-old has endured a testing time at the King Power Stadium since his club record £28 million move from Sporting back in 2016, with the forward mustering just 43 appearances for the Foxes, only 23 of which have been starts.
In fact, the Algeria international was so low down on Puel’s pecking order that he was shipped out on loan to fellow Premier League side Newcastle United in the second half of the season, but his injury woes there and stupidity in getting himself banned for the last few games of the campaign look set to cost him a permanent move to the Magpies.
As such, Slimani looks set to leave Leicester this summer, but were Vardy to indeed join Atletico, the 29-year-old may finally get the chance to become the club’s number one striker.
Clearly, England international Vardy is the main man at the King Power Stadium, and rightly so given he scored 23 goals in 42 games for the club this term, but that status has certainly impacted on the opportunities and ultimately the form of other strikers at the club, Slimani and Kelechi Iheanacho to name but a few.
But one mustn’t forget that the 29-year-old managed seven goals and five assists for the Foxes last term, and while they are hardly ground-breaking figures, they represent a fine return for one’s first season in England, at the same time suggesting that there is a prolific goal-scorer in Slimani if his ability can be unlocked.
And as the main man at Leicester, he could certainly prove his credentials, with Slimani clearly very adept aerially and in holding the ball up, at the same time possessing genuine ability on the ball and when in front of goal.
And Vardy’s departure would surely open the door for more appearances and thus more minutes on the pitch for the Algerian ace, from which Leicester can only benefit next time round.
Thus, while Leicester fans are unlikely to be thrilled were Vardy to leave this summer, it would likely be great news for outcast Slimani in his bid to salvage his career at the King Power Stadium.
