Leicester City supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the 2018/19 Premier League season, what with their side seeking to improve upon their ninth place finish last time round.
Claude Puel’s men deserve credit for sealing a top-half finish in the top-flight last term but their form in 2018 was something of a concern, what with the Foxes only managing five wins from their 18 games from the turn of the year. As such, the pressure certainly increased on Frenchman Puel as the season wore on, but with a full pre-season and summer transfer window, our resident Leicester fans are hoping for even more improvement from their team in the 2018/19 season.
As such, there are many excited and expectant Foxes supporters in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be thrilled by recent reports suggesting that their club are closing in on a move for Norwich City’s James Maddison.
And were the Midlands outfit to indeed seal a deal for the £9 million-rated sensation (as per Transfermarkt), it would finally solve Puel’s number ten worries at the King Power Stadium.
Ultimately, the former Southampton boss tried several players in the attacking midfield position last term with Demarai Gray, Riyad Mahrez, and Kelechi Iheanacho are trying their hand at the role, with varying degrees of success.
And with Mahrez seemingly on his way to champions Manchester City, and Gray arguably more effective from the wide position, Puel is still searching for that perfect number ten ahead of the new season – Maddison appears to be that man.
The 21-year-old enjoyed a majestic campaign for Norwich last term in netting 15 goals and laying on 11 assists in 49 appearances for Daniel Farke’s side, 14 goals and eight assists of which coming in their run to 14th place in the Championship.
And with three appearances for the England Under-21 side in the last few years, it’s clear that the attacker is destined for big things in the game, and while some of our resident Foxes fans are concerned that he hasn’t played Premier League football, it is surely just a matter of time before he proves his worth at top-flight level.
At the tender age of 21, Maddison is clearly a signing for both the present and indeed the future, and with Leicester likely looking to challenge for the European spots in the coming years, bringing in young, hungry, and indeed talented players like the Englishman appears to be the right way forward.
Significantly though, not only would Maddison bolster the attacking ranks at the King Power Stadium, but his addition may finally solve Puel’s evident number ten problem at the Midlands club.
