Leicester City supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the 2018/19 Premier League season, what with their side hoping to build upon their solid ninth place finish last time round.
Claude Puel’s men made a slow start to the 2017/18 campaign and were languishing in and around the relegation zone in the early stages of the season, only to eventually secure a top half finish under the former Southampton boss. However, the pressure certainly built on the Frenchman as the campaign went on, and our resident Foxes supporters will be hoping that he can make some telling signings to take the club forward next time round.
And one man who has recently been linked with a move to the King Power Stadium is Borussia Dortmund forward Mario Gotze, scorer of the winning goal for Germany in the 2014 World Cup final.
And were the Foxes to indeed seal a deal for the £16.2 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), it would finally provide Puel with his ideal Leicester number ten.
Ultimately, the Frenchman appears to have struggled to fall upon the perfect man to slot into the number ten role at the King Power Stadium, what with the likes of Demarai Gray, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Riyad Mahrez all tried in that position, and to varying degrees of effect.
And with the latter seemingly on his way out of the club, Gray seemingly much better out wide, and Iheanacho a possible partner in attack for Jamie Vardy, it appears that Puel will have to delve into the transfer market to get his perfect number ten – Gotze could be that man.
Clearly, while the 26-year-old hasn’t enjoyed the best of times in recent years, and as such missed out on selection for this summer’s World Cup in Russia, one mustn’t forget that the attacker was one of the most exciting forwards in European football just a matter of years ago, hence he earned a big money move to Bayern Munich back in 2013.
And while many argue that Gotze didn’t quite produce the goods at the Allianz Arena, he still managed 36 goals and 24 assists in 114 appearances for the Bundesliga giants, before returning to Dortmund back in 2016.
And with incredible ability on the ball in opening up defences with his pin-point passing and excellent vision, Gotze would provide Puel with a fantastic option in that attacking midfield role – Vardy would get plenty of goal-scoring opportunities with the 26-year-old just behind him.
Yes, Gotze hasn’t been at his best in recent times, but a fresh start somewhere could be exactly what he needs to return to his peak – a peak that many sides in the Premier League would benefit from having in their squad.
As such, Leicester must seek to firm up their interest in the German ace, as doing so would finally give Puel his ideal number ten heading into the 2018/19 season.
