Leicester need to be keeping tabs on Danny Drinkwater’s situation at Chelsea.
The Englishman was a key player for the Foxes during their historic Premier League title win back in 2016. Drinkwater struck up an excellent partnership with N’Golo Kante in the centre of midfield, something he has been unable to replicate at Stamford Bridge. The midfielder was also a huge reason behind the form of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, constantly picking out Leicester’s dangermen with his wonderful range of passing.
He eventually joined Chelsea in the summer of 2017 but was restricted to just five Premier League starts under Antonio Conte. Following the arrivals of Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley, Drinkwater has been pushed even further down the pecking order in London. Maurizio Sarri admitted he must improve to force his way into his plans, but a January exit looks far more likely with Drinkwater seemingly surplus to requirements.
Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, Leicester should definitely consider bringing the 28-year-old back to the club. Drinkwater excelled next to Kante in the midfield pivot and could find similar success alongside the tough tackling Wilfred N’Didi. His excellent range of passing combined with N’Didi’s defensive ability could prove to be a fantastic partnership for Claude Puel. Drinkwater’s return could also help Vardy score even more goals and allow Demarai Gray to continue his hot streak.
If he could rediscover his form of 2016, the move could prove to be an astute piece of business from the Foxes.
