Leicester City supporters have been pretty quiet in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days, what with their side drawing 0-0 at home to Premier League strugglers Southampton on Thursday to extend their winless run to three matches.
Claude Puel’s men went into their clash with the relegation-threatened Saints off the back of successive 2-1 defeats at the hands of Newcastle United and Burnley, two results which all but ended their hopes of a seventh place finish and thus European football in 2018/19. And the Foxes were unable to record a first home league victory since January on Thursday after failing to get past Mark Hughes’ side at the King Power Stadium, thus leaving the Midlands outfit eighth in the Premier League with four games of the campaign remaining.
Subsequently, there have been many frustrated Leicester fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are beginning to get restless with manager Puel after having won only four Premier League games in the New Year, just two of which at home.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Foxes supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for Manchester United’s Marouane Fellaini this summer, what with his contract up at the end of the season.
And while the 30-year-old would likely be a useful addition to Puel’s squad, they should forget about the midfielder and instead target a move for his £18 million-rated United teammate Daley Blind (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the Netherlands international has struggled for regular football under Jose Mourinho this season with just 16 first team appearances to his name, only six of which coming in their run to second place in the Premier League.
Yes, injury has played a part in his difficulties since the turn of the year, but even when fit during the first half of the season, the 28-year-old rarely started for the Red Devils – this all despite their obvious struggles at left back throughout the campaign.
As such, Blind may be on the lookout for a move away this summer, and Leicester should be at the front of the queue for his signature.
The Dutchman is a vastly experienced player with over 50 caps for the Netherlands under his belt alongside 89 Premier League appearances, yet more significantly he is a versatile star that can hugely benefit Puel next season.
Blind has played much of his United career at centre back, which is sure to be of interest to Puel given the reported interest in Foxes defender Harry Maguire, as well as the struggles for form of captain Wes Morgan, while he has also been used extensively at left back, which again is likely to delight the Leicester boss given the unconvincing efforts of Ben Chilwell and Christian Fuchs this term.
Add in his capabilities in a defensive-midfield role, and there’s little doubting that by just landing Blind, several areas of the Leicester squad would be improved and bolstered.
Yes, Fellaini’s arrival would certainly strengthen the midfield ranks, but his United teammate Blind is a much better and more efficient option given his adeptness in a variety of positions, positions Leicester must improve if they are to sustain a challenge to the top six next term.
Thus, the 2016 Premier League champions should forget about Fellaini and instead seek to land his out-of-favour United teammate Blind this summer.
