Leicester City supporters have been pretty quiet in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side’s slim hopes of qualifying for Europe all but come to an end courtesy of a 2-1 defeat at Burnley on Saturday.
Claude Puel’s men went into their meeting with the Lancashire-based outfit in eighth place in the Premier League table and six points adrift of the Clarets in seventh, a position which could yield a European spot were Southampton to fail to win the FA Cup. Yet the Foxes are pretty much out of the running after going down at Turf Moor, with first half goals from Chris Wood and Kevin Long setting Sean Dyche’s side on their way to all three points, and although Jamie Vardy did get one back for Puel’s men late on, it wasn’t enough to prevent a 12th league loss of the season.
As such, there have been many despondent Leicester fans in the Tavern in recent times, although their mood may well be improved by recent reports linking them with a £20 million move for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish this summer.
And although the 22-year-old has enjoyed a fine year at Villa Park, the Foxes should forget about a move for the Englishman, and instead focus their efforts on luring £13.5 million-rated Fulham star Tom Cairney (as per Transfermarkt) to the King Power Stadium.
Ultimately, while Grealish has struggled for consistency in the last few seasons, the opposite is true of Scotland international Cairney, who was absolutely outstanding in inspiring the Cottagers to the Championship play-offs last season with 12 goals and 11 assists during the regular season.
And although he missed a large chunk of the first half of this term through injury, the 27-year-old has certainly made up for lost time with four goals and five assists in 31 league appearances, the same number of assists but a goal more than Grealish has managed this time round.
Thus, it’s pretty clear that Cairney has consistently been one of the Championship’s most effective attackers in the last few years, with many seemingly believing that he can excel in the Premier League given the vast amount of reported interest in his services, not least from Puel’s Leicester.
Yes, Grealish is significantly younger the Cairney and as such could be a better long-term option for the Foxes, but if the Midlands outfit are eyeing up someone for the coming years, which they certainly should be given they aren’t far away from the top six, then the Fulham ace would be the shrewder addition.
With the pacey and tenacious Vardy ahead of him, alongside the likes of Riyad Mahrez and Demarai Gray, amongst others, down the flanks, Cairney’s could be in his element such is his wonderful vision and brilliant weight of pass – he could be a huge asset to Puel in what he is trying to build at Leicester.
Thus, while there is no doubt that Grealish has been in sensational form for Villa this term, the more seasoned professional in Cairney is the Championship star Leicester should seek to land this summer.
