Leicester City supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been using the last few days to look back at their side’s relatively successful campaign to date, and indeed look ahead to what could be in store for their team between now and the end of the season.
The Midlands outfit went into the 2017/18 campaign off the back of a 12th place finish under Craig Shakespeare, although the Englishman lasted just eight games of this campaign after a poor start. Yet former Southampton boss Claude Puel has picked up the pieces and looks set to lead the club to a top half finish in the Premier League, with European football still an outside chance in the final few games of the campaign.
As such, there are many satisfied Foxes fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are hoping their side can strengthen again over the summer in a bid to bridge the gap to the top six teams in English football’s top tier.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Leicester fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Harry Maguire with a move away this summer.
Yet there’s only one defender who the 2016 league champions should be getting rid of this summer, namely Yohan Benalouane.
Ultimately, the 31-year-old has failed to live up to expectations since his move from Atalanta back in 2015, with the Tunisia international managing just 28 senior appearances for the Foxes in the last few years, just 15 of which coming in the Premier League.
Yet this term has seen the centre-back fail to make even one appearance in the league for Puel’s side, with Benalouane having to make-do with three FA Cup starts and a solitary Carabao Cup appearance to underline his lowly position in the Foxes pecking order.
And with Maguire continuing to impress since his move from Hull City in the summer, alongside title-winning captain Wes Morgan and loan star Aleksandar Dragovic, it’s clear that the 31-year-old has no future at the King Power Stadium, and probably still wouldn’t command regular football even if Maguire did leave this summer.
And with Leicester possibly eyeing an assault on the top six next season, they simply need more quality throughout their squad than what Benalouane currently offers them.
As such, the Foxes should forget about selling Maguire this summer, as there’s only one defender they should be getting rid of during the close season, namely 31-year-old Benalouane.
