Leicester City supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team get back to winning ways courtesy of a 3-1 success over Arsenal on Wednesday night.
Claude Puel’s men went into their meeting with the North London heavyweights having failed to win any of their previous five league matches, a run of form which increased the pressure on the Frenchman ahead of Arsenal’s visit. Yet his team produced a fine performance to swat aside the Gunners, with goals from Kelechi Iheanacho, Jamie Vardy, and Riyad Mahrez sealing a comfortable victory for the Foxes, in turn guaranteeing them at least a ninth place finish in the Premier League this season.
Consequently, there have been many delighted Leicester fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping that their side finish the season on a high when they travel to Arsenal’s North London rivals Tottenham in their final match on Sunday.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Foxes supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking striker Islam Slimani with a move to Besiktas this summer.
And given the striking options available to Puel at the King Power Stadium, alongside the Algerian’s hopeless loan spell at Newcastle, the Midlands outfit simply must sanction the £19.8 million-rated star’s (as per Transfermarkt) departure this summer.
Ultimately, the 29-year-old hasn’t quite had the desired effect in English football since his move to Leicester back in 2016, with the striker only managing 23 Premier League appearances for the club last year, albeit in which time he did net seven times.
But his season was disrupted by several niggling injuries, and it’s a thigh problem that pretty much put pay to his chances of impressing at Newcastle in the second half of this season, what with Slimani having to wait two months to make his debut for the Magpies.
And with just four appearances to show for his endeavours in the end, in which time he failed to net, there are huge question marks over both the 29-year-old’s capabilities in English football, and indeed whether he is fit enough over the course of a season to lead the line effectively.
Significantly though, Slimani could only muster 12 Premier League appearances for Leicester, just two of which were starts, in the first half of this season to underline his lowly position in the pecking order, with Vardy, Iheanacho, and Shinji Okazaki clearly more viable options to manager Puel.
And with the Frenchman often, but not always, playing just one up top, being fourth choice striker (arguably fifth now behind January signing Fousseni Diabete) is ultimately going to yield very few opportunities for regular football.
As such, if Besiktas are indeed to intensify their reported interest in the Algeria international, Leicester should seek to get rid of the 29-year-old this summer after a testing time in English football.
