Leicester City supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the remainder of the summer transfer window, what with their side likely eyeing reinforcements to take them to the next level next season.
Claude Puel’s men finished ninth in the Premier League this time round to underline their status as one of the ‘best of the rest’ in the division, although their form in 2018 was not something to shout about, with the pressure somewhat building on the Frenchman as the season wore on. However, victory over Arsenal alongside a fine display at Tottenham may have bought Puel some time, although additions will certainly be needed during the close season to take the club forward next term.
And one man who reportedly could be on his way to the King Power Stadium this summer is West Brom’s £4.5 million-rated Ahmed Hegazi (as per Transfermarkt), an addition which could spell seriously bad news for current Foxes skipper Wes Morgan.
Ultimately, the 34-year-old didn’t enjoy the best of campaigns this time round despite more often than not being one of the first-choice centre backs at the King Power Stadium, with the former Nottingham Forest man appearing in 32 of their 38 Premier League games.
However, he didn’t look close to the defender and captain that led Leicester to the most improbable of title successes back in 2016, and at the age of 34, one wonders whether this season was the start of the defender’s decline.
And adding another centre back to the squad in Hegazi, who debuted impressively in the top-flight this term, could be another indication that Puel is planning for life after the influential ace.
27-year-old Hegazi started all 38 of West Brom’s Premier League games this season, and while he was part of a Baggies side relegated from the top-flight, he certainly couldn’t be attributed blame for their demise given his efforts over the course of the campaign.
And with reports linking the Foxes with his teammate Jonny Evans as well, alongside a possible permanent deal for fellow centre back Aleksandar Dragovic, the defensive ranks could look a whole lot different at the King Power Stadium next term, even if Harry Maguire does leave amid interest from clubs in the top six.
And that wouldn’t be great news for Morgan as, although he remains the club captain and is likely to heading into the new season, there simply would be better options at Puel’s disposal than the 34-year-old.
Thus, the addition of Hegazi this summer, who proved himself to be an accomplished top-flight defender this season, could spell seriously bad news for Morgan.
