Leicester City supporters have been pretty quiet in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side underwhelm in only mustering a 0-0 draw with Southampton in the Premier League on Thursday.
Claude Puel’s men went into their clash with the relegation-threatened Saints having lost their last two matches at the hands of Burnley and Newcastle United, results which all but ended their hopes of European football for next season. And those slim dreams were very much banished on Thursday after failing to get past Mark Hughes’ struggling side, and following Everton’s win over Newcastle on Monday night, Puel’s Foxes slipped a place to ninth in the Premier League table with just a few games of the campaign remaining.
Thus, there have been some disappointed Leicester fans in the Tavern in recent times, many of whom are beginning to get slightly frustrated with manager Puel what with their team mustering just four wins in 2018, only two of which coming at the King Power Stadium.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Foxes supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that their club are interested in a move for Porto right back Ricardo Pereira.
And were the Midlands outfit to need land the £11.7 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer, they would propel into top six contention next season.
Ultimately, while Puel deserves great credit for steering Leicester away from the bottom three and into the top half, it’s clear that reinforcements are needed over the summer, what with many of those title-winning stars of 2016 not at their very best.
Danny Simpson, as well as Wes Morgan and Christian Fuchs amongst others, simply haven’t hit the heights this term, to the point that all three were on the bench against Southampton to suggest that changes could take place over the summer.
And were they to bring a more dynamic and forward-thinking right back in like Pereira, they would instantly reap the rewards.
The 24-year-old returned to the Portuguese heavyweights back in the summer after a two-year loan spell at French side Nice, in which he worked under Puel, and he has certainly proven his worth with two goals and seven assists in 41 appearances for the club, helping them to top spot in the Primeira Liga table.
And with an adeptness as both a wing back and indeed a right winger, Pereira would offer the Foxes significantly more going forward than Simpson, while also helping solidify a backline that, albeit has been adequate this term, has conceded more goals than all but one side currently in the top half of the Premier League.
Significantly though, landing Pereira would be a statement of intent that the Foxes are indeed in the battle for a top six spot, and given they are 13 points behind Arsenal this season, and haven’t won at home since January, they would surely start eating into that deficit.
As such, the 2016 league champions must land the 24-year-old this summer, as doing so would put them right into the mix for a top six spot in the Premier League next season.
