Former cricketer Darren Gough has voiced his opinions on a potential international future for Jamie Vardy, discussing whether it would be worth the Premier League’s top scorer coming out of international retirement in time for next summer’s European Championships.
Vardy retired from international duty after the 2018 World Cup, though Gareth Southgate is thought to have left the door open for the 32-year-old to return to the England setup – with the striker in red-hot form as his 16 Premier League goals so far this season have lifted Leicester City to second place.
However, speaking on TalkSPORT, Gough feels that the presence of Harry Kane and Tammy Abraham means that Vardy may either go unused or played out wide in the summer.
He said: “I wouldn’t go back to Vardy now, because I think they have got Kane and Abraham who are fantastic centre-forwards.
“They both work for the team, their movement is fantastic, both of them are very similar – Kane’s probably a better all-round footballer.
“The problem is if [Southgate] brings Vardy in, does Vardy play in the other way he plays if he plays off the left? Can he start for England in that left position?
“Or is he going to think, ‘although he’s banging in the goals, do you know something, I’ve got Tammy Abraham who can score, I’ve got [Marcus] Rashford who’s scoring, I’ve got [Raheem] Sterling who’s started scoring for England – do I need him?’”
Given that Vardy has been out of England contention for the past 18 months or so, a return to Southgate’s plans may be surprising as the emergence of 22-year-old Abraham is exactly the kind of reason he hung up his international boots in the first place.
However, his form is hard to ignore, with Southgate hardly ruling out an attempt to lure him back to the Three Lions squad in recent weeks.
Although, perhaps his dazzling club form is a result of calling time on his England career, having already nearly usurped his league goal tally from each of the past two seasons prior to Christmas.
Either way, it seems that his performances may give Southgate a decision he may not have expected to make in the months to come.
