Leicester City are allegedly eyeing up highly-rated youngster Emmanuel Dennis, according to reports from Get French Football News.
The report states that the site’s ‘reliable colleague’ Manu Lonjon believes that the Foxes have started discussions with Club Brugge for Nigerian forward Emmanuel Dennis.
Will Jamie Vardy win the Premier League Golden Boot?
The 21-year-old is reportedly a ‘top priority’ for Brendan Rodgers, with Leicester in need of a mid-season booster – especially in the attacking department with 32-year-old Jamie Vardy having played every minute of this season so far.
Club Brugge – the Belgian Pro League’s current leaders without a game lost – are allegedly wanting between €20-23m (£17.29-19.88m) for the services of the forward, who has scored six goals in 16 games this season – most notably his double against Real Madrid in the Champions League, per Transfermarkt.
So, with Leicester boasting the top-scorer in the Premier League in Jamie Vardy – do they need to go after Emmanuel Dennis and is there a chance of this one coming off?
Well, let’s not forget that Leicester have another young Nigerian at the moment who has not been fancied by Brendan Rodgers in Kelechi Iheanacho, and he has had no action whatsoever.
Iheanacho has made just four matchday squads this season, according to Transfermarkt, suggesting that a forward of far better ability is needed to even test Jamie Vardy’s position.
Obviously, with Vardy being top of the scoring charts, finding a player who is good enough to replace him when not available while also being simultaneously happy to be the second choice is no easy task whatsoever.
With Emmanuel Dennis, they have identified a player who is showing some goalscoring potential based on his current stats, but he still has a lot to prove. He also plays all across the frontline and isn’t necessarily an out-and-out striker.
For some reason, Iheanacho’s move hasn’t quite worked out – but they need to do a similar thing with this next transfer. They need a player who can plausibly fill the boots of Vardy in the future but is willing to learn from him until he isn’t good enough anymore.
Leicester need another striker – and Dennis has shown he can do it at the top level from when he tore apart Real Madrid at the Bernabeu earlier this campaign. He can also play on either wing which shows his versatility and could also mean that he can still get game time if Vardy is playing too well to be substituted.
However, for around £20m, the pool of information available on him is too little to suggest he would be a great buy. At 21 – soon to turn 22 on November 15 – he has scored just 15 times from 49 Jupiler Pro League matches. Leicester could ideally do with someone to fill Vardy’s boots who can score more goals than that, but that certainly doesn’t mean he couldn’t improve and start churning out decent numbers in the Premier League.
