Despite a phenomenal start to the season that has left Leicester third in the Premier League, they look set to be busy in the January transfer window.
Would Rodgers leave Leicester in the lurch for a bigger job?
Indeed, manager Brendan Rodgers looks keen to bolster his centre-back options, being linked with Kristoffer Ajer of former club Celtic. According to the Daily Record, the former Liverpool boss is ‘undoubtedly’ a fan of the player.
The Foxes sold Harry Maguire to Manchester United for £80m in the summer and didn’t directly replace the England international after rumoured moves for James Tarkowski and Nathan Ake failed to materialise.
The Maguire-shaped hole in the defence has been plugged by Caglar Soyuncu, who has adapted well to life in the Premier League alongside Jonny Evans. Indeed, the Turkish international has earned rave reviews from pundits such as Alan Shearer.
Rodgers coached Ajer when he was in charge at Celtic Park, and the Daily Record reports that he is ‘undoubtedly a fan’ of the Norwegian centre-back.
Any move could depend on Foxes defender Filip Benkovic leaving the club in January, potentially on a loan deal to the Scottish champions where he spent the 2018/19 season on loan.
Ajer arrived at Celtic in January 2017 from Start, before joining Kilmarnock on loan until the end of that season. Under Rodgers’ watch, he’s played 66 times (as per TransferMarkt), scoring one goal and registering one assist in that time.
The 21-year-old’s impressive start to the season has clearly caught the attention of his old manager and this looks a good fit for the youngster in a growing side that sits in the Premier League top four at the moment given his previous work under Rodgers’ coaching.
Indeed, the Foxes’ recruitment has been excellent in recent seasons and, with Wes Morgan ageing, perhaps he could emerge as a potential heir.
