Many Leicester City fans have had some harsh words for Riyad Mahrez after he revealed his frustration at not being able to leave the King Power.
The winger, once awarded PFA Player of the Year when they were Premier League champions, has now seemingly damaged his reputation with the Foxes fans by blaming the club for stunting his development at the highest level.
He said to France Football (via the Mirror): “For me, it’s clear that I lost two years at the highest level. I lost two years! Because instead of arriving at City at 27, I could have been there at 24, 25.
“Leicester blocked me. They told me: ‘You’re not leaving, you’re not leaving’.
“My agent had spoken to [Arsene] Wenger who really wanted me. It was nearly all done with Arsenal in 2016. I was really frustrated.
“It wasn’t easy to go from being the best player in the Premier League to being a part of a team fighting against relegation.”
The Algerian winger played for the East Midlands club between the years of 2014 and 2018, appearing 179 times and managing to score 48 times while also assisting 38.
Many Leicester fans seemed shocked by the comments of their former hero, considering that they had achieved so much together by winning the title and subsequently reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
With the club now second in the Premier League, perhaps fans do not feel like they need to cling onto the success of former heroes now, and are quite comfortable to not pay him the respect he once had at the club.
Many fans responded; some suggested that there is no longer any loyalty in football and that his reputation is ruined, while another suggested it was more his agent at play.
Here are some of the replies below…
We did him a favour – what have Arsenal done in the last few years ?

Mahrez was good but he only played when he felt like it. It would kill him if he was still at LCFC

Strikes me he’s unhappy at not getting in the Man City team and so needs to up his public profile. He can’t have a moan at Pep, even though I’d bet he wants to, so unfortunately we become the scapegoats. I’d bet his agent is behind this again. Sad reality of a puppet on a string.

Player signs contract then complains that he had to honour it. Deserves to collect splinters on the bench. Thanks for the Title season Mahrez – But you have completely soiled your rep
