Midfield sensation Youri Tielemans has told the press that he is happy that he joined Leicester City over other big clubs that were interested.
According to Goal, Tielemans attracted interest from both Manchester United and Arsenal but chose to go back to Leicester City and Brendan Rodgers after his successful loan spell there last year.
The 22-year-old has now opened up on why he chose third-placed Leicester rather than join a club with a bigger reputation.
“I needed to make a choice for my young career and I think it was the right one. To arrive off the back of a €45m transfer doesn’t change anything.
“They already knew me at Leicester. My loan spell went very well. I wanted to continue playing for this club.”
It’s perhaps a surprise that Youri Tielemans would make a decision to join Leicester over two of England’s most successful teams. However, it can be seen as a mature one from the 22-year-old considering his experience and the places that both sides are going.
Last season at Leicester, Tielemans fitted in straight away. Not only has Rodgers himself said that “Youri fit brilliantly into the squad last season”, but his stats suggested it as well. In his 13 league games last year, he managed to conjure a very respectable three goals and five assists.
For Tielemans, it’s already looking like a right move. At Leicester he knows he will play, considering that he went there last season and has become a key player – having played almost every minute so far this year.
At Manchester United and Arsenal, it could be more difficult to get into their respective starting lineups. At United, he would have to battle with Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira and even more, which would leave him no certainties about his starting place. It’s a similar thing at Arsenal – Dani Ceballos, Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil would all be competing against the youngster.
That’s not to say he wouldn’t necessarily play, though he wouldn’t have that security as he does at Leicester – which could be so important for a 22-year-old.
You have to admire the decision from Tielemans, as Leicester are obviously a much less glamorous proposition. It seems as if the Belgian has his eyes on what is best for his career rather than instant gratification.
It’s also great work from Brendan Rodgers and Leicester who have managed to convince the player to buy into his project. Leicester now have a really exciting squad, featuring the likes of Jamie Vardy and James Maddison, at their disposal and it’s not far-fetched to say that they’re far off the level of both Arsenal and a United side sitting in eighth if their start to the season is anything to go by. Tielemans can still play at that level, but could have a far more influential role at Leicester.
