Leicester City supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last few weeks after seeing their side suffer their second quarter-final defeat of the campaign after going down 2-1 to Chelsea in the FA Cup last time out.
Claude Puel’s men were beaten by eventual champions Manchester City in the last eight of the Carabao Cup earlier in the season to end their hopes in that particular competition, but the Foxes hit back to get past Fleetwood Town, Peterborough United, and Sheffield United to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. However, they were to be denied in that competition as well as goals from Alvaro Morata and Pedro either side of a Jamie Vardy equaliser sealed Chelsea’s place in the semi-finals, where they will face Mark Hughes’ Southampton next month.
Thus, there have been many despondent Foxes fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can finish the season strongly in a bid to build momentum ahead of the 2018/19 season.
And several of our resident Leicester supporters are already looking ahead to the summer transfer window, with many believing that their team should go after ex-Foxes left back Patrick van Aanholt if Crystal Palace get relegated this season.
Ultimately, the Netherlands international has gone from strength to strength in the last few years, pretty much ever since sealing a permanent move away from Chelsea back in 2014.
The 27-year-old played a huge part in keeping Sunderland in the Premier League back in 2015/16 with five goals and three assists for the Black Cats, and looked like doing so again the campaign after until they somewhat surprisingly sold him to relegation rivals Palace.
Yet he has continued to prove his worth since making the move to the capital with four goals in 36 games for the Eagles, and with starts in each of their last nine Premier League matches, it’s clear that he is an important part of things under Roy Hodgson this time round as well.
Be it as a left back or playing slightly further forward in a wing back role, van Aanholt has shown great adeptness at Premier League level in both positions, which must be of interest to Leicester boss Puel, what with current left back options Ben Chilwell and Christian Fuchs not always convincing this season.
And if the Foxes are serious about sustaining a challenge to the top six sides next term, and thus knocking on the door of the European places, it’s a position that certainly needs bolstering – van Aanholt’s arrival would do just that.
Unlike Leicester, Palace are in a relegation battle near the foot of the division and could well lose their Premier League status this term. Doing so would surely see a huge overhaul of the playing squad this summer, with 27-year-old van Aanholt himself arguably too good to be playing in the Championship.
As such, were the Eagles to indeed go down this season, Leicester should seek to re-sign the £8.1 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), seven years on from his 12-game loan spell at the King Power Stadium.
