According to a recent report from The Daily Mail, Manchester United could make a £65 million move for Leicester City defender Harry Maguire. The 25-year-old enjoyed an outstanding debut season at the King Power Stadium to earn himself a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the recent World Cup, where the centre back continued his fine form to help the Three Lions reach the semi-finals of the competition.
And now it seems that United are keen on the defender, but with the Red Devils likely having to sell before landing Maguire, Leicester should absolutely demand £31.5 million-rated United star Eric Bailly (as per Transfermarkt) as part of a possible deal.
Ultimately, Claude Puel’s Foxes were actually pretty disappointing defensively last season in shipping 60 goals in their 38 Premier League matches, a tally that was greater than the relegated duo of Swansea City and West Brom.
Yet that figure would have been a lot higher were it not for Maguire’s efforts in the heart of their backline, with the centre back appearing in all 38 of their league games, and clearly doing something right to win the club’s Player of the Season award.
Thus, there is little doubting that losing the 25-year-old would be a huge loss to Puel and his Leicester side ahead of the 2018/19 campaign, which is why they must seek to get something more than just money out of a possible deal taking him to United, namely Bailly.
The 24-year-old only moved to Old Trafford back in 2016 but has proven to be one of the better centre backs at the North West giants, only for the Ivory Coast international to struggle to just 13 Premier League appearances under Jose Mourinho last time round.
Yes, some of that difficulty came as a result of injury, but on the whole it appears that Bailly has fallen down the pecking order at United, and as such could well be pushed out of the club altogether, either as a result of Maguire’s arrival, or indeed to make room for the Englishman.
And that is why Leicester simply must ask the question about potentially bringing the 24-year-old to the King Power Stadium, as he would undoubtedly fill the Maguire-shaped hole in Puel’s backline – they would be helping United out by giving them Maguire, so United should seek to help them out by giving them Bailly.
While he maybe wasn’t at his best last season, Bailly’s first season at United was particularly impressive to the point that many felt he was the long-term solution to the Red Devils’ centre back concerns – thus, he clearly has ability to produce the goods in English football.
And with Robert Huth having left Leicester this summer, alongside the fact that Wes Morgan is very much entering the twilight of his career, losing Maguire and failing to replace him could have serious repercussions for the Foxes this season.
And that is why they should absolutely demand Bailly as part of a possible deal to take Maguire to Old Trafford.
