Leicester City supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side go down 2-1 at home to Newcastle United on Saturday to suffer just their third Premier League defeat of 2018.
Claude Puel’s men went into their meeting with the North East giants having won four and drawn four of their 12 league games since the turn of the year, a run of form which has all but secured them a place in the top ten. Yet the Foxes suffered their first home loss since the middle of December on Saturday as goals from Jonjo Shelvey and Ayoze Perez set the Magpies on their way to all three points, and while Jamie Vardy got one back for the hosts, it wasn’t enough to prevent an 11th Premier League defeat of the campaign for the Midlands outfit.
Consequently, there have been many disappointed Leicester fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can get back to winning ways against Burnley on Saturday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Foxes fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater could seek a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer.
And many of those Leicester fans lining up at the bar in the Tavern are urging their team to make an ambitious attempt to re-sign the £18 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
Ultimately, the 28-year-old has struggled for regular football at Chelsea following his move from Leicester during the summer, with just 12 Premier League appearances, of which only three have been starts, to show for his efforts so far.
Yes, injuries did play a part in his early season exclusion from the matchday squad, but he has since got back to full fitness and still found it difficult to break into Antonio Conte’s first team plans, despite the Blues embarking on a tough campaign as defending Premier League champions.
The 28-year-old was outstanding in the Foxes’ midfield en route to the Premier League title back in 2016, striking up a formidable central midfield partnership with now Chelsea teammate N’Golo Kante, and Leicester may need the Englishman’s qualities again if they are to move to the next level under Puel.
Wilfred Ndidi has performed well in the middle of the park this season, to the point that he could well be off during the summer amid interest from other clubs, yet there still remain some question marks over the capabilities of Vicente Iborra and Adrien Silva, both of whom have shown glimpses of promise but haven’t yet done so consistently.
Yet there would be no such question marks surrounding Drinkwater, who has proven, in the blue of Leicester no less, that he is an extremely adept midfielder at Premier League level, and is exactly the sort of signing that could help take the Foxes to the next level next season.
As such, with the 28-year-old reportedly eyeing a move this summer, Puel’s men must seek to make an ambitious move to re-sign the England international.
