Leicester City supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their side comfortably dispatch of Brighton 2-0 on Saturday, thus consolidating eighth place in the Premier League table.
Claude Puel’s men went into their meeting with the South Coast outfit having won one and drawn the other two of their last three league games, and having lost just twice in the league since the turn of the year. And the Midlands club continued their decent form at the weekend as late goals from Vicente Iborra and Jamie Vardy secured the victory for the Foxes, in turn securing an 11th Premier League win of the season, and moving three points clear of ninth place Everton.
As such, there have been many thrilled Leicester fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can continue their fine form between now and the end of the season to build momentum ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
Yet several of our resident Foxes supporters are already looking ahead to the summer and who their side could look to sign to move to the next level next season, with many of the opinion that they should target a move for Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand if the Saints go down.
Ultimately, the 28-year-old has become England’s number one left back in recent years such have been his consistently high-level performances for the Saints, scoring six goals and laying on 17 assists in 139 appearances for the club since his move there back in 2014.
And while he maybe hasn’t been at his best this season in a poor Southampton team, the former Chelsea man still looks set to make Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad to further underline his capabilities, capabilities that will surely be out of place in the Championship next season were the Saints to go down.
And that is one reason why Leicester must seek to land the 28-year-old this summer.
They themselves aren’t well-stocked in the left back department, what with Ben Chilwell often unconvincing when given the nod, and Christian Fuchs not at the level he produced to help them win the Premier League title back in 2016.
And if the Foxes are seeking to move to the next level and thus challenge for the European spots next season, they have to fill that void with someone accomplished and proven at this level – Bertrand could be the answer.
Ultimately, the 28-year-old has been linked with Manchester City in the last 12 months to underline exactly how good he is, and as such appears to be the calibre of player that can take Leicester into the top six conversation.
Thus, the Foxes must seek to land the £18 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) if the Saints get relegated this season.
