Leicester City supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the rest of the summer transfer window, what with their team eyeing up the reinforcements that could take them to the next level in the Premier League.
Claude Puel’s men recorded a ninth place finish in the English top-flight this term much to the delight and applause of our resident Foxes fans, although their form in 2018 was somewhat of a concern given they won just five of their 17 league games since the turn of the year. Puel himself was coming under fire from some sections of supporters as the campaign wore on, but with his first summer window and pre-season to come, he now has the chance to stamp his authority on things at the King Power Stadium ahead of the 2018/19 season.
And one man who could be on his way to the Midlands outfit is Aston Villa attacker Jack Grealish, what with recent reports suggesting that the Villans may need to sell this summer after failing to achieve promotion to the Premier League.
And these reports must trigger Leicester to make a summer move for the £4.5 million-rated target (as per Transfermarkt) after a stellar season in the second tier for Steve Bruce’s men.
Ultimately, the 22-year-old hasn’t always turned his incredible talent and potential into meaningful contributions on the pitch in the last few years, but he certainly showed improvement this time round in netting three goals and laying on six assists in 30 Championship games for Villa.
In fact, he played as big a part as anyone in helping Bruce’s side finish in the play-off positions this term, while it was he who carried the threat of the Villans in their play-off defeat to Fulham last weekend – ultimately, he was the most impressive Villa player on the day.
And while that ultimately counted for very little, it further underlined the maturity that Grealish has shown this season in slowly but surely becoming the player his potential suggests he can be, with the next step to showcase his talents in the Premier League.
Leicester are one side reportedly keen on his services, and as such must take advantage of Villa’s failure to win promotion by moving for the 22-year-old this summer.
Foxes chief Puel struggled to fall upon a regular number ten for his 4-2-3-1 formation this season, with the likes of Demarai Gray, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Riyad Mahrez all trying their hand in a more central position, to varying degrees of effect.
But with Mahrez likely to leave the club this summer, the Midlands outfit will without doubt be in need of someone who, like the Algeria international, can make things happen out of very little and produce snippets of brilliance – Grealish could be that man.
And having excelled in a more advanced central position at Villa this season, he could be the answer to Puel’s number ten conundrum, and as such give Leicester even greater creativity and spark in the final third of the pitch.
And with the likes of Gray down the flank and Jamie Vardy up top and running the channels, Grealish could hugely flourish, and as such continue developing into the player his potential suggests he could be.
As such, with Villa reportedly likely to have to sell this summer, Leicester must capitalise by making a move for the 22-year-old during the close season.
