Leicester City supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team record a 2-0 success at Brighton on Saturday to consolidate eighth place in the Premier League table with just seven matches to play.
Claude Puel’s men went into their clash with the Seagulls on the South Coast having won one and drawn the other two of their last three league matches, and having lost just twice in the league in 2018. And the Foxes continued their fine form on Saturday as late goals from Vicente Iborra and Jamie Vardy sealed all three points for the Midlands outfit, in turn securing an 11th Premier League win of the season, and moving three points clear of ninth place Everton.
Consequently, there have been many delighted Leicester fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can maintain their impressive recent run of form between now and the end of the season in a bid to build momentum ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
Yet some of our resident Foxes supporters are already looking ahead to the summer and who their team should sign, with many of the opinion that their club must go after Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri should the Potters go down to the Championship.
Ultimately, the £16.2 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) has been a rare shining light in a desperately disappointing season for the Staffordshire-based club this term, with the Switzerland international bagging seven goals and laying on six assists in 29 Premier League appearances for Paul Lambert’s side.
Remarkably, they are the 26-year-old’s best returns since moving to the bet365 Stadium back in 2015, which goes to show how good they have been in the last few years to record mid-table finishes, and exactly how bad they have been this term to face relegation to the second tier.
As such, Shaqiri is performing well in a poor Stoke side this term and may not be able to keep them up despite his best efforts, but in a Leicester team surrounded by arguably much better players, the former Bayern Munich man could shine.
With the lethal Jamie Vardy in front of him, the 26-year-old would be able to utilise his wide array of passing in the final third to create genuine goal-scoring opportunities, while with towering centre-backs Wes Morgan and Harry Maguire to aim at, his set piece prowess would surely be effective.
And were the Foxes to indeed lose Riyad Mahrez this summer, Puel’s side would certainly need a player like Shaqiri, someone who can produce magic from nowhere like the Algeria international, to replace the 2015/16 PFA Players’ Player of the Year.
Leicester fans saw first-hand what the 26-year-old can do when he bagged a wonderful goal in the 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium back in February, and were the Potters to indeed get relegated this season, Shaqiri is unlikely to be at the club come August such is his evident ability in the top-flight.
And with Leicester seeking the next level under Puel next season, they simply must seek to land the Switzerland international come the summer if Stoke go down.
