Leicester City supporters in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to their team’s clash with Premier League strugglers Southampton this evening, what with the Foxes needing a win to keep their faint top seven hopes alive.
Claude Puel’s men sit eighth in the Premier League table and nine points behind seventh place Burnley after going down 2-1 to Sean Dyche’s side on Saturday, a result which gives the Clarets the ascendency in the race for seventh place, which could yield European football if the Saints fail to win the FA Cup. Yet victory tonight over Mark Hughes’ relegation-threatened side would give the Midlands outfit some hope of beating Burnley to seventh, although all three points is a must for Puel’s men.
Subsequently, there are many excited Foxes fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are confident that their team can bounce back from a disappointing display at Turf Moor on Saturday by producing a much better one against Southampton tonight.
And some of our resident Leicester supporters are speculating upon what changes Puel may seek to make against his ex-employers, with many of the opinion that £7.2 million-rated ace Marc Albrighton (as per Transfermarkt) must get the nod at the King Power Stadium.
The 28-year-old was somewhat surprisingly benched against the Clarets on Saturday and stayed there for the whole of the 90 minutes, this despite embarking on a campaign which has seen him score twice and lay on seven assists for the Foxes.
Significantly though, it’s the Englishman’s tenacity and incredible work-rate which Leicester are likely to need against the Saints this evening, what with Hughes’ side in need of all three points and likely to set their stall out to get at Leicester and make life uncomfortable for them.
And Albrighton’s willingness to dig in defensively and then offer an outlet when going forward may be invaluable at the King Power Stadium tonight, as will be his battle with Saints right back Cedric Soares, who hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons this time round.
And with Albrighton seeking to take his defender on and get crosses into the box towards the front men, the Foxes could benefit from that match-up down their left-hand-side, especially given that Demarai Gray did little against Burnley to warrant another start this evening.
As such, given the season he has had and the impact he could have on proceedings this evening, Puel must seek to bring the 28-year-old back into his starting eleven against third-bottom Southampton.
