Leicester’s reported £3m defender capture could turn out to be the bargain of the summer

Leicester City supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team thumped 5-0 by relegation-threatened Crystal Palace on Saturday to end their slim Europa League qualification hopes.

Claude Puel’s men went into their clash with the Eagles having failed to win any of their preceding three league games, a run which saw them slip nine points adrift of seventh place Burnley ahead of Saturday’s game. And their European hopes are now in tatters as goals from Wilfried Zaha, James McArthur, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Patrick van Aanholt, and Christian Benteke secured a comprehensive win for Roy Hodgson’s side, thus leaving Leicester ten points behind the Clarets with just nine left to play for.

Consequently, there have been many disappointed and angry Leicester fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are getting increasingly restless with manager Puel after a run of just four wins in their last 18 Premier League games.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Foxes supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that their club will secure a £3 million move for West Brom’s Jonny Evans this summer.

And given the eye-watering sums of money being spent in recent times, their reported £3 million capture of the 30-year-old could turn out to be one of the bargains of the summer.

Ultimately, it wasn’t too long ago that the Northern Ireland international was being linked with a move to Arsenal and Manchester City, with both sides reportedly eyeing the centre back during the January window to bolster their own defensive ranks.

And while the defender did indeed stay at West Brom, and looks set to be part of a side relegated from the top-flight this season, he has again proven his worth in being a rare shining light in an ultimately disastrous campaign for the Midlands outfit.

Be it with the ball at his feet and bringing it out of defence, or indeed going toe-to-toe with some of the best strikers in the division, Evans has shown to be adept at both aspects of the game this season, and indeed throughout his time at both West Brom and indeed Manchester United.

And there’s little doubt that he could help a Leicester defence that haven’t always been convincing this season, with their 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Palace last weekend underlining Puel’s need to reinforce his back line.

Wes Morgan hasn’t been anywhere near his best this season while fellow title-winning centre back Robert Huth hasn’t played at all in the Premier League, and while loan signing Aleksandar Dragovic has done well when played, he has only earned nine league appearances, much to the surprise of our resident Leicester fans.

Thus, it’s clear that if the Foxes are to challenge for the European spots next season, they have to strengthen at the back, and Evans is without doubt a defender whose arrival would significantly help.

And for a reported £3 million, it could turn out to be one of the bargains of the summer window.
