According to BBC Sport, Claude Puel is undecided whether World Cup star Harry Maguire will start against Man United at Old Trafford tonight.
The defender, alongside striker Jamie Vardy, only returned to training this week after their World Cup exploits, and Puel does not want to rush them back so soon. Few would disagree, however, that it would be a fitting return for a player that has been so heavily linked to Man United throughout the transfer window.
Leicester were busy on transfer deadline day, signing two defenders, Filip Benkovic and Caglar Soyuncu, meaning they have cover for Maguire, although with so little time at the club, it would be strange to rush the new signings into the team so soon.
New recruit Jonny Evans could partner captain Wes Morgan in defence against the Red Devils in Maguire’s absence, although it would be all the sweeter for Puel if the former Hull man was able to start.
If Maguire was able to star for Leicester tonight, it would be the final nail in the coffin after Man United pursued him throughout the summer. Leicester will be delighted that they managed to retain him, and will expect the best from him when he is ready to return.
Despite reportedly wanting a move to Manchester, Maguire seems to have the temperament and character of a player that would still give his all for whomever he is playing for. Leicester’s joy will be in contrast with Man United’s despair, as Jose Mourinho failed to land a defender on deadline day, despite being linked with a number of players.
Players’ welfare is the most important thing, and if Maguire is not ready to return, then he shouldn’t be rushed back. But this is an appearance that so many neutrals will want to see.
