Leicester City supporters have been pretty quiet in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side only muster a 0-0 draw at home with Premier League strugglers Southampton on Thursday night.
Claude Puel’s men went into their clash with the relegation-threatened Saints having lost both of their preceding league encounters, going down 2-1 at home to Newcastle United before succumbing to Burnley by the same scoreline. And the Foxes were unable to record a 12th league victory of the campaign at the King Power Stadium on Thursday in earning a scoreless draw with Mark Hughes’ side, a result which did neither team any good in their respective aims for the campaign.
Consequently, there have been several frustrated Leicester fans in the Tavern in recent times, many of whom are beginning to get increasingly restless with manager Puel, what with their team having managed just two home wins in 2018, and only four overall.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Foxes supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Saints forward Sofiane Boufal has been told to train on his own by manager Hughes, thus throwing his future into doubt.
And with ex-Southampton boss Puel reportedly an ‘admirer’ of the £13.5 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt), these recent reports should prompt the Foxes to make a summer move for the 24-year-old.
Ultimately, the Morocco international has struggled to make a positive impact at St Mary’s since his move from Lille back in 2016, with Puel the man who brought him to English football while in charge on the South Coast.
But just four goals and three assists in 59 appearances is not what Southampton fans would have expected from the £16 million man, and while he has featured more this time round, he has remained too inconsistent to be relied upon.
Yes, he scored a wonderful goal to help the Saints beat West Brom back in October, but he has added just one goal and two assists since then, and for a player who commanded a £16 million price-tag, that simply isn’t good enough.
However, it’s evident from his time in England that Boufal has an enormous amount of talent and potential, and who better to get the best out of him than Puel, who oversaw his excellent development at Lille.
In fact, Boufal produced the best campaign of his career to date back in 2015/16 in netting 12 goals and laying on four assists for the Ligue 1 outfit, which suggests that Puel knows exactly how to extract that talent from the 24-year-old.
And in a Leicester team which is likely to be eyeing a top six assault next season, he could be a big asset, especially were star man Riyad Mahrez to leave the club during the summer.
And with an ability to play anywhere across the front line, the Moroccan star would be a great option for Puel to have at his disposal, and given recent reports of a bust-up with Hughes, Leicester must seek to take advantage by making a move for the 24-year-old during the close season.
