Leicester City supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the rest of the summer transfer window, as their side eye up additions that can take them to the next level in the Premier League next season.
Claude Puel’s men secured a ninth place finish in the top-flight this time round, but their form in 2018 was majorly concerning, and ultimately cost them a spot in qualifying for the Europa League. Manager Puel also came in for much criticism as the campaign wore on, but with his first pre-season and summer window to come since taking charge at the King Power Stadium, things are expected to be even better for the Foxes next term in their bid to challenge for the European spots next season.
However, it is just as important that Leicester retain the services of their most prized assets, not least linked-away star Jamie Vardy, what with recent reports suggesting that Atletico Madrid are interested in the striker.
Yet the Foxes are reportedly seeking to respond to such interest by opening talks over a new contract with the £18 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), with securing an agreement with the England international without doubt the biggest deal Leicester can strike this summer.
Ultimately, the 31-year-old has played a significant part in Leicester’s success in recent seasons, not least in their remarkable title-winning campaign of 2015/16 in which he netted 24 goals and laid on eight assists for Claudio Ranieri’s side.
And with 13 goals last term, and a further 20 this time round under Puel, the Englishman continues to go from strength to strength, and is without doubt one of the best strikers outside of the division’s top six.
Significantly though, there isn’t anyone remotely like Vardy in the Leicester forward ranks, as the 31-year-old is full of energy, tenacious, and ultimately a complete nightmare to defend against – yet he is also hugely prolific in front of goal.
Take the England international out of the Leicester starting eleven, and the Foxes immediately lose a big goal threat, but also a key part of what they are about as a side – yes, Vardy is replaceable, but finding that replacement who offers just as much, if not more, than the 31-year-old is an almighty task.
And that is why they simply have to secure an agreement regarding his future this summer.
In Kelechi Iheanacho, the Foxes have a very prolific goal-scorer, and one who at the age of 21 will only get better, while Shinji Okazaki offers a great deal in the final third without necessarily getting the goals – yet neither offer as much as Vardy.
He combines the tenacity and relentless work-ethic of Okazaki with the quality in front of goal of Iheanacho, and as such gives Leicester something extra in the attacking third of the pitch that very few others do.
Thus, amid interest from Atletico Madrid, the Foxes simply must strike an agreement with Vardy over a new deal, as doing so would be bigger than any deal they get done during the close season.
