Leicester City supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side suffer a humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.
Claude Puel’s men went into their clash with the relegation-threatened Eagles having failed to win any of their preceding three league matches, a run of form which put a serious dent in their hopes of finishing seventh and thus qualifying for the Europa League. And those dreams are now in tatters as goals from Wilfried Zaha, James McArthur, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Patrick van Aanholt, and Christian Benteke secured a comprehensive victory for Roy Hodgson’s side, thus all but securing their top-flight status.
Thus, there have been many disappointed and angry Leicester fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are growing increasingly frustrated with manager Puel, what with their team having won just four times since the turn of the year.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Foxes supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Puel will hold talks with loan star Aleksandar Dragovic regarding a permanent move to the club.
And several of those Leicester fans lining up at the bar in the Tavern had one message for the Foxes boss: sign him up.
Ultimately, the 27-year-old has been a shrewd acquisition by the Midlands outfit this term having made 14 appearances for the Foxes, nine of which coming in the Premier League.
And while that isn’t a ground-breaking number of appearances, the Austria international has certainly proven his worth when on the field for Puel’s side, including making six successive Premier League starts between January and February.
In fact, some of our resident Leicester fans have been calling for Dragovic to regularly replace Wes Morgan in the heart of their side’s backline in recent weeks, such have been Dragovic’s fine efforts but also the struggles of captain Morgan, who simply hasn’t produced the level we all saw from him in their title-winning campaign of 2015/16.
And that is a chief reason why they must seek to seal a permanent deal for Dragovic this summer.
Other than Harry Maguire, Puel isn’t inundated with reliable centre back options at the King Power Stadium, and if the Foxes are to challenge for the European spots again next term, they simply have to tighten up defensively having conceded 52 goals so far this season.
And given the impressive snippets produced by Dragovic over the course of the current campaign, he could well do a job in that Leicester back four alongside either Maguire or Morgan, or perhaps as the longer term replacement for the latter.
As such, the 2016 league champions simply must attempt to secure a permanent deal for the £9 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
