Leicester City supporters have been pretty downbeat in recent times after seeing their side suffer defeat in the Premier League just prior to the international break.
Claude Puel’s men went into their meeting with Everton on October 6 off the back of beating Huddersfield Town and Newcastle United in their previous two league games, and thus full of confidence ahead of the visit of Marco Silva’s Toffees. Yet the Foxes were unable to record a third straight win as goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson either side of a Ricardo Pereira equaliser sealed a 2-1 success for the Merseysiders, thus inflicting a fourth Premier League defeat of the season on Puel’s Leicester.
As such, there have been many disappointed Foxes fans up and down the country throughout the international break, and their mood is unlikely to be improved by a recent report from The Daily Mirror, which links left Ben Chilwell with a move to Liverpool.
The defender came up through the ranks at the King Power Stadium to make his debut for the club back in 2015, but recent years has seen the 21-year-old become a vital member of the first team squad at the King Power Stadium.
And Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are reportedly keen on luring the England international to Anfield, what with Alberto Moreno seemingly on his way out of the club in the summer, and this interest simply must prompt Claude Puel’s Foxes to strike an agreement with Chilwell by tying him down to a new long-term deal.
Ultimately, it has taken Chilwell some time to become a first team regular at Leicester given his made his senior debut for the club back in October 2015, but he added just 21 further appearances for the Midlands outfit over the course of the 2015/16 and 2016/17 campaigns.
Yet the left back became a feature of Puel’s side last term, and more often than not produced the goods with two assists in 24 Premier League appearances for the Foxes, only to reach another level altogether this time round in starting all eight of their league games so far and helping the side to four wins and two clean sheets, at the same time earning himself a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
And it is for his country in which Chilwell has underlined his incredible talent and huge potential with a very composed display in their 0-0 draw with Croatia before impressing greatly in their excellent 3-2 win in Spain back on Monday – the Leicester man certainly produced the goods on the big stage.
He didn’t look overawed by the occasion and seemed to seamlessly slot in at left back in Southgate’s side, thus translating his fine form for Leicester onto the international stage for his country – and that appears to have interested Liverpool boss Klopp.
And these recent reports place a great deal of emphasis on the Foxes extending and indeed improving Chilwell’s current deal at the King Power Stadium, in a bid to fend off interest in one of their brightest stars.
Puel’s men are one of those sides in the Premier League unlikely to get relegated and as such will be plotting to see if they can get in amongst the European spots both this season and beyond, but they can’t do that if the top six sign their best players – Chilwell is fast becoming one of those.
Ultimately, if the Foxes are to build as a club and seek to bridge the gap to those sides above them, they simply cannot be in the business of selling their best players, and while they may sometimes struggle to fend off interest in their stars, they have to give themselves the best chance of retaining their most prized assets.
Chilwell is certainly one of those now after a fine 12 months or so, and that is why they have to strike an agreement with the 21-year-old over a new deal amid interest from Liverpool.
