According to a report from Sport, Leicester City have made a move for Barcelona and Colombia defender Yerry Mina. The 23-year-old excelled for his country at this summer’s World Cup in helping them reach the last 16, yet that pales in stark contrast to his difficulties at the Nou Camp in the six months previous in struggling for regular football under Ernesto Valverde.

And Claude Puel’s Leicester have reportedly made a move for the £18 million-rated World Cup star (as per Transfermarkt), who could well be the perfect replacement for current Foxes centre back Harry Maguire were he to leave the club this summer.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the efforts of both Mina and Maguire during the World Cup finals this summer have attracted much interest across Europe, with the latter impressing greatly for England to the point that Manchester United have been linked with a £50 million move.

As such, Leicester could well struggle to retain the 25-year-old beyond the August 9 deadline next month, yet 23-year-old Mina could well be the perfect replacement for the England international.

The Barcelona centre back made the move to the Nou Camp back in January but has just six senior appearances to show for his six months at the Spanish giants, with it clear that he still has some way to go before forcing his way into the Catalans first team.

However, his incredible efforts for Colombia at the World Cup appears to have raised his stock ten-fold, and no wonder given the defender netted three goals in three games for the country to help them to the last 16, where they were knocked out by Maguire’s England on penalties.

But it wasn’t just his goal-scoring exploits that have impressed, as Mina struck up an excellent partnership with Tottenham centre back Davinson Sanchez in the heart of the Colombia backline, to the point that Harry Kane’s penalty during normal time was the only goal they conceded while Mina was on the pitch during the tournament.

Thus, it’s clear that the 23-year-old has an extremely bright future in the game, but he also has pedigree that could help Leicester out in the present as well, as he is surely going to get better given the confidence he would have got from a fine showing in Russia.

Yes, Leicester will obviously hope to keep hold of Maguire beyond this summer’s deadline, but were it not to happen, 23-year-old Mina could well be the perfect replacement for the in-demand defender.
