While we are still in the early period of the 2012/13 season, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will be concerned at with the current form of the side. The summer transfer window saw several favourites leave White Hart Lane and their ‘replacements’ are struggling to fill their boots.
Luka Modric got his big money switch to Real Madrid and Van Der Vaart, somewhat surprisingly was allowed to leave for German club Hamburg SV. Tottenham brought in several players to fill the void left by Modric and VDV: Gylfi Sigurdsson, Clint Dempsey and Mousa Dembele were all purchased to aid Andre Villas-Boas’ take over. None of these players have shown the same craft and artistry that Modric and Van der Vaart did during their time at Tottenham.
They could unlock a defence with one clever pass, something that Spurs are finding it harder to do this season. Luckily Bale and Defoe are in fine form and the pace of the Spurs side still offers destructive counter-attacking power.
Sky Sports News has reported on Tottenham scouting 30 year old Leonardo Ponzio, as a possible addition to Tottenham’s midfield. In Ponzio, Tottenham would be adding a defensive minded midfielder to their squad. This could be due to the fact that Scott Parker doesn’t look to be any where near a return date from his achilles injury.
Currently at River Plate, the Argentine did not seem overly enthusiastic about a move away from his homeland, stating, “At my age I have to analyse everything with my family”. Spurs may have to look elsewhere if they are serious about adding depth to their holding midfield position.
In my opinion, Spurs should concentrate on the squad they have. They already have a large number of midfielders some of whom can play in a variety of positions. The currently injured Moussa Dembele is a talented footballer. He could be the magic ingredient that saw Tottenham impress in the Champions League; a sprinkling of class the likes of Modric and Van der Vaart provided during their tenure.
I believe they already have it in their squad somewhere, Villas-Boas just needs to find the right combination.
