Tottenham last night sent scouts to watch Ajax centre-back Jan Vertonghen, according to the Daily Mail, in his sides Europa league clash with Manchester United.
The £12 million rated Belgian defender gave a typically assured performance on the ball during Thursday’s game, but was some what exposed by Javier Hernandez’s runs in behind the Dutch side’s defence.
The Daily Mail also suggest that Arsenal and Chelsea are also monitoring the performance of the Ajax Captain.
However the Daily Mail’s story was lacking in both evidence or sources to offer validation to this report. If this scouting mission of Spurs did occur it would further fuel speculation of Ledley King’s contract talks stalling, which could develop into a continuing story for tabloid newspapers up and down the land.
Tottenham’s defence has looked particularly solid this season, with King playing more consistently than previous seasons and Kaboul looking impressive there appears to be little reasoning for Spurs to sign an extra centre-back without world-class pedigree.
Harry Redknapp’s side already have a surplus of defenders demonstrated by Sebastian Bassong’s loan move to Wolves earlier in the season and Kyle Naughton is also still on the books at White Hart Lane.
The speculation surrounding Harry Redknapp’s future also undermines the likelihood of current scouting missions resulting in new arrivals in North London. Redknapp appears destined to leave White Hart at the end of the season and any incoming manager is certain to have his own ideas regarding new signings.
