As he watches his former club Chelsea sack their manager following a few indifferent results, Andre Villas Boas will be sighing with relief as he is set to be given £20m to spend in January.
The under-fire Spurs manager looks like he will be backed by chairman Daniel Levy in the transfer window as reports suggest that he will be given cash to splash as the Lilywhites bid to reignite their Champion’s League push.
So who will be on his January wish list? Joao Moutinho was very much on Tottenham’s radar in the summer and with Gylfi Sigurdsson in average form, the Portuguese play-maker could be the key to linking Spurs’ hard-working midfield with their talented strikers.
Moutinho would slot in very nicely alongside Moussa Dembele and Sandro and I could really see him doing well at Spurs. Whether he will be allowed to leave mid-season is debatable and figures of around £20m were mentioned in the summer, so Levy might not be so keen to splurge all his money on one player.
The North-London club could also do with another striker on their books. Alan Dzagoev is a name that has been linked with them and he would add a different element to a Tottenham front line currently consisting of Jermaine Defoe, Emmanuel Adebayor and Clint Dempsey. He’s got three goals in 11 matches in the Russian Premier League, but his five assists would also be of interest to AVB and Defoe who has been starved of a partner this season.
Dzagoev wouldn’t be too pricey either and that could open the door for a bit more spending. It is well known that Villas-Boas is in the hunt for a left back, so could Leighton Baines be in line for a move? He is regularly one of the highest performing players in the Premiership and his set piece taking would improve Tottenham’s woeful record from free-kicks and corners.
Whatever happens, it looks like AVB is set to stay at White Hart Lane longer than his successor at Stamford Bridge and that means that some new faces could be seen in North London fairly soon. Moutinho would make the most difference, but the likes of Dzagoev or even Christian Eriksen, linked with Liverpool earlier this year, could send Spurs shooting up the table.
