The Manchester City fans were feeling disappointed in the Transfer Tavern last night after they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat against FC Basel at The Etihad Stadium.
The City supporters were expecting their side to take the foot off the gas somewhat last night considering their midweek fixture arrived on the back of a hectic week for the club, and Pep Guardiola’s starting eleven reflected that overriding feeling. Phil Foden, Cludio Bravo, and Yaya Toure were all handed rare starts for the club whilst the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Sergio Aguero were given an opportunity to rest their legs.
City’s defeat will not arrive as any major concern for anybody involved with the club, but that did not prevent the supporters from expressing their frustration with their side’s performance. A handful of individuals were singled out for criticism by the fans on Twitter in the aftermath of proceedings, especially Yaya Toure who made only his 7th start of the season last night.
Tour will certainly rank highly amongst a number of City legends following his departure from the club, as his performances down the years have played a pivotal role in the clubs rapid transformation. The Ivorian has scored crucial goals when City have needed him most, and the fans will always look upon him favourably for that.
However, the fans couldn’t help but express their disappointment with regards to his performance last night. In truth, he looked a shadow of his former self, and it’s become quite clear that he is well past his peak at 34-years-of-age.
After witnessing Toure’s lacklustre performance, the City fans took to Twitter to criticise his display and call for the club to usher him out of The Etihad this summer. Considering his contract is up in June 2018, it seems inevitable that the supporters will get their wish.
Here’s a selection of the Twitter reaction to Toure’s performance last night…
Oh man, Yaya Toure really should not be playing football anymore.

No. I expect him to not be a liability.

Not the same as seeing him in his prime though, like watching an old dog die, rather not see it as much as I love the guy

I know some love him…but please, if I never see Yaya Toure in a City shirt again, it’ll be too soon. I appreciate what he did 4/5/6 years ago…but once he disrespected our club, fans and owner over 2 years ago…for me, it was over. Tonight proved he’s finished. JMO.
