Manchester City fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are slightly alarmed at the sensational news coming from the Daily Mail.
The publication seem to be under the impression that their dream bid for Lionel Messi could well be rivalled.
The Citizens had been dreaming not about a white Christmas, but about acquiring possibly the best footballer of our generation – if not ever.
Messi has now allegedly become discontented with life at the Camp Nou and has been subject of several outbursts in the past few weeks.
Of course he has a huge buy out clause and it is one that both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain could easily afford. The French side are looking to build a team that not only dominates Ligue 1 but also the face of Europe for years to come.
Both Laurent Blanc’s side and City see the bid for Messi as the way to do this. It would cost serious, serious money to even begin negotiations with the player and figures of £210 million are currently being bandied about. As our landlord notes, that makes Gareth Bale look like a penny sweet!
Quite what current star of the PSG side Zlatan Ibrahimovic would make of a bid for Messi remains to be seen with the egotistical Swedish forward struggling to gel with the Argentine during his ill-fated spell at the Camp Nou.
Will City be able to rival PSG for Messi or is this all media hype? Let us know your thoughts below.
