‘Like playing with 10 men’ – Newcastle take aim at one man despite Liverpool draw

Newcastle supporters were in good voice in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after seeing their side deservedly take a point off Liverpool.

Rafa Benitez’s side were beaten 1-0 by Brighton last weekend to suffer a first defeat in the Premier League since August 20, but produced a much-improved display to hold Jurgen Klopp’s Reds at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Philippe Coutinho’s brilliant strike gave the visitors the lead after 29 minutes, but that lead lasted just seven minutes as a Jonjo Shelvey through ball too easily dissected the Liverpool backline, allowing Joselu to advance towards Simon Mignolet’s goal from which, albeit fortunately, he levelled proceedings.

Both teams had chances to nick the three points in the second half although had to settle for a share of the spoils, a result which moved Newcastle up to ninth, but saw Klopp’s Reds slip to seventh.

And although it was a fine performance from Benitez’s Magpies, there was one man who came in for much criticism on Twitter after the match, namely Ayoze Perez.

The Spaniard has started all seven of their Premier League games this season but has so far yet to score for the side, and was on the peripheries of the action for much of the 90 minutes on Sunday.
