Likely blow for Guardiola as midfield target reportedly ‘rejected’ Man City

Manchester City supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side narrowly overcome Championship side Bristol City 2-1 in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

Pep Guardiola’s men went into their clash with the Robins still unbeaten in domestic competition this season after coming from behind to beat Burnley in the third round of the FA Cup a few days earlier, and they were made to work hard for their victory on Tuesday night as well. Bobby Reid gave Lee Johnson’s men a first half lead at the Etihad Stadium, although the Citizens hit back after the break with goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero to take a slender lead to Ashton Gate in two weeks’ time.

Thus, there have been many happy City fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from Corriere dello Sport (via Calcio Mercato), which suggests that Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has ‘rejected’ a move to City in favour of one to Juventus.

The 23-year-old’s future at Anfield has been subject of speculation for a while now given that his current deal is set to expire in the summer, and no extension as of yet has been agreed.

And City were one side reportedly interested in landing the influential midfielder, as were Juventus, and recent reports suggest that the Italian giants have indeed won the race for the Germany international, who reportedly ‘rejected’ a move to both City and indeed Bayern Munich.

And given how impressive Can has been in the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield in the last 18 months or so, this is likely to come as a blow to Citizens chief Guardiola, who may have to look further afield in hope of bolstering his midfield ranks.

Landlord’s verdict: Emre Can’s future at Liverpool has been dominating the headlines for a while now, with the 23-year-old’s current deal set to expire in the summer, and no extension looking forthcoming.

Several sides sought to exploit the situation, with Manchester City and Juventus reportedly interested, yet recent reports suggest that the latter have agreed terms with the midfielder, this all after he reportedly ‘rejected’ a move to Pep Guardiola’s Citizens.

And this may well come as a blow to the Spaniard, especially given how influential Can has been at Anfield recently, but it looks as though he has missed out on the Germany international, and as such may need to turn his attentions to other targets.
