Likely January disappointment for Newcastle and Tottenham as unwelcome reports emerge

Newcastle United and Tottenham supporters have been in contrasting moods in the Transfer Tavern during the two-week break for internationals, what with the Magpies losing their last two games before the fortnight’s interruption, while Spurs won both of their matches.

Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle made a fine start to the new season upon return to the Premier League by winning four of their opening nine games, but successive 1-0 defeats to Burnley and Bournemouth have checked their momentum and seen them fall into the bottom half of the table. Yet things are lot brighter in North London as Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham brilliantly dispatched Real Madrid 3-1 to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League, before backing that up with a 1-0 success over Crystal Palace to move level on points with second place Manchester United in the division.

Thus, there has been a very different mood among both sets of supporters this week, yet neither are likely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from Sporx, which suggests that Cenk Tosun, a target of the Premier League duo, is open to remaining at Besiktas until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old made the move to the Turkish giants back in 2014 and has since been an absolute revelation with 60 goals in just 133 games for the club, thus helping them to successive Super Lig titles.

And with ten goals in just 15 appearances so far this term, the Turkey international continues to underline his goal-scoring credentials, and he has unsurprisingly attracted much interest from Benitez’s Newcastle and Pochettino’s Tottenham in recent times.

However, both look set to be disappointed in January as Tosun is reportedly willing to stay at Besiktas for the rest of the campaign in a bid to win a third consecutive league title, which certainly leaves a New Year deal highly unlikely, although doesn’t rule out a move for the striker in the summer.

Landlord’s verdict: Cenk Tosun has been one of the most in-form strikers in European football over the last 12 months or so, having netted 20 in Besiktas’ run to the Super Lig title last season, as well as ten in just 15 matches this time round.

And he has unsurprisingly attracted much interest in recent times, not least from Newcastle United and Tottenham, albeit both look set to be disappointed in January as the striker reportedly wants to see out the season at the Turkish giants.

Yet a summer deal certainly remains a possibility for the Premier League duo, and were Tosun to continue scoring goals for fun for Besiktas, he could be very hot property come the end of the campaign.
