Liverpool ace desires January move, ‘sounds’ out Euro giant

Liverpool supporters have been pretty buoyant in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their side narrowly beat Merseyside rivals Everton 2-1 at Anfield on Friday night to book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their encounter with the Toffees off the back of a 13-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, a streak which has seen move above both Arsenal and Tottenham into the all important final Champions League spot. And our resident Reds fans may have a cup run to enjoy as well this term as goals from James Milner and Virgil van Dijk either side of a Gylfi Sigurdsson equaliser sealed a 2-1 win for Klopp’s side, and thus booked them a clash with Alan Pardew’s West Brom in the last 32 at the end of the month.

Consequently, there have been many happy Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few days, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from Tuttosport (via The Daily Mail), which suggests that striker Daniel Sturridge has named the club he wants to join this month in a bid for regular football.

The England star has struggled to force his way into Klopp’s plans ever since the German took over at Anfield back in 2015, with the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and now Mohamed Salah often preferred by the former Borussia Dortmund chief.

And with just five Premier League starts so far this season, and none since November, the 28-year-old knows that he faces World Cup disappointment come the summer if things don’t change, and recent reports suggest that he has ‘offered himself’ to Italian giants Inter Milan for the second half of the campaign.

And with the Serie A outfit clearly in need of more firepower having netted just 35 goals in 20 games this term, significantly fewer than their closest rivals, it’s a move which could well power Sturridge back in consideration for Gareth Southgate’s England squad come the end of the season.

Landlord’s verdict: Daniel Sturridge’s exclusion from Gareth Southgate’s most recent England squad was the clearest indication yet that things needed to change for the striker if he is to make this summer’s World Cup.

As of yet, nothing significant has changed for the 28-year-old, but the man himself is trying to do just that this month as reports suggest that he wants a move to Inter Milan in a bid for the regular football to thrust him back into England contention.

However, Philippe Coutinho’s departure to Barcelona may force Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to keep the striker to keep his attacking ranks well-stocked, yet the Spaniard’s move to the Nou Camp is unlikely to make much of a difference to Sturridge’s playing chances.

Thus, the next few weeks are absolutely crucial for the 28-year-old, with a move away seeming to be his only option if he is to make the England squad this summer.
