Liverpool fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are glad their current defender recognises his position at the club after the Daily Mirror revealed that Glen Johnson wants to join Ashley Cole at Roma.
It has been made well aware that the 30-year-old’s time is up at Anfield and his agent is now trying to push him into a move to Serie A.
Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender Ashley Cole is not the only English fullback to venture out to Italy, with Micah Richards having also made the move abroad, as he is out on loan to Fiorentina.
Johnson is currently on £120,000-a-week at the Reds and he has rejected the possibility of signing a short term extension with a big wage cut.
Which is why his agent, Jonathan Barnet, has said his client is looking for a fresh start in Italy.
“We’ve had no contact with Roma, although Roma would be a lovely place for him,” he said. “Ashley Cole absolutely adores it there, I represent him as well.
“Ashley thinks very highly of Rome, but we’ve had no contact with Roma regarding Glen.
“He’s obviously looking for things at the moment. He’s looking at many clubs.
“Glen is obviously looking for somewhere where he can turn around his career – that’s the most important thing for him – where he can play nicely under a good club that’s challenging for things. That is where he wants to be.”
