Liverpool players transferring to West Ham United have become a bit of a theme down the years here at the Football Transfer Tavern and the Daily Mirror’s Darren Lewis and David Maddock look set to continue this theme with news that Stewart Downing could be on his way to Upton Park.
The Mirror duo have rocked up at the bar with news that the Hammers have made a £6 million bid for the former Aston Villa man. This news receives a few sarcastic cheers from a couple of Hammers out in the smoking area and a couple of Millwall fans burst out laughing.
Once the initial news has settled in, a few Irons supporters start discussing the potential move for the 29-year-old and actually realise what a sensible and successful signing this could be for Sam Allardyce’s side, especially with Downing delivering crosses for former Liverpool team-mate, Andy Carroll.
Darren and David believe that talks with West Ham and Downing are nearing completion with the only stumbling block being over the player’s £80,000-a-week wages but Liverpool are so desperate to get Downing off their books that they are willing to pay up the rest of his contract.
Anyway, got to go, a Liverpool punter has had a bit too much and is asking West Ham fans if they will take Jordan Henderson too (having already had Andy Carroll, Joe Cole and potentially Stewart Downing).
