Here at the Football Transfer Tavern it seemed that we spent most of the weekend looking at potential replacements for Rio Ferdinand at Manchester United and now according to Metro Liverpool are following suit and looking for the next Jamie Carragher.
Of course the Reds club legend is retiring in the summer and that will leave Brendan Rodgers short of defenders and indeed leaders within the club. He is apparently eyeing Mamadou Sakho as a potential replacement and given that the 23-year-old has made noises about leaving his current club a move is not beyond the realms of possibility.
Having fallen down the pecking order rather dramatically at Paris Saint-Germain, Sakho is looking for a new challenge and is desperate to play first team football in order to secure a place in the French national side for the 2014 World Cup.
The player himself claimed to L’Equipe that: “In the mind of the PSG coach, I’m third [in the pecking order of central defenders]. I finally accept it, even if I do not understand it, especially since I’ve not had an explanation – that disappointed me too.”
This will obviously give Rodgers hope in his chase for the player but as our punters warn he will be facing stiff competition to land the Parisian defender.
Does Sakho represent the ideal option in replacing Carragher? Rate this rumour below.
