Liverpool and Arsenal target signs new five-year deal

Marek Hamsik (Napoli)

Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik is well liked in the Football Transfer Tavern for his mohican hairstyle and we, along with Liverpool and Arsenal, are disappointed that the Slovakian will not be coming to the Premier League after signing a new deal in Italy, as reported by Sky Sports.

Hamsik has been a long-term target for both Arsenal and Liverpool with Manchester United also having kept a close eye on him over the past 18 months.

Hamsik is the unsung hero of the Napoli side who have climbed their way towards the top of Italian football, competing in the Champions League too beating Manchester City in recent years.

The Naples club sold main man Edinson Cavani to Paris Saint-Germain for a whopping £48 million earlier this summer and so have been desperate to show Hamsik that the club is not just about selling its main players.

New Napoli boss Rafael Benitez has already added new, exciting faces to his squad ahead of the new season with Gonzalo Higuain and Pepe Reina among the imports.

Liverpool have been long-term admirers of the Slovakian international playmaker but it has been Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger who has shown the most interest with his centre of midfield struggling for fitness last season.

Manchester United boss David Moyes is desperate to land a midfielder after seeing his bid for Cesc Fabregas turned away and so Hamsik would have been high up on his list of alternatives.

“It is a shirt that Marek is happy to honour. We have renewed his contract, extending it until 2018,” Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed yesterday.
