‘Too good to be true’, ‘Unsure about this’ – Liverpool and Newcastle fans react to surprise transfer news

Liverpool and Newcastle United supporters have been in contrasting moods in the Transfer Tavern this week, what with the Reds losing 4-1 at Tottenham last weekend while the Magpies edged past Crystal Palace 1-0 to move up to seventh place in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool went into their clash with the North London outfit having won just three of their opening eight games, but they were comprehensively beaten thanks to a brace from Harry Kane, as well as goals from Son Heung-min and Dele Alli. Whereas things were much brighter in the North East at the weekend as Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle recorded their fourth victory of the season thanks to Mikel Merino’s late header, a result which propelled the Magpies up to seventh place in the table, a point and two places clear of Klopp’s Reds.

And, unsurprisingly, our resident Liverpool fans have been drowning their sorrows in the Tavern this week while those hardy Newcastle supporters have been making a lot of noise, and both sets of supporters are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Sun, which suggests that the duo are interested in Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

The 36-year-old moved to the Portuguese giants back in 2015 to end a 25-year association with Real Madrid, with whom he won five La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns, while at the same time winning the 2010 World Cup and 2008 and 2012 European Championships with Spain.

Yet reports suggest that Porto could be looking to offload the shot-stopper in January in a bid to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, and as such both Liverpool and Newcastle are reportedly interested in the Spaniard.

And news of a potential move for Casillas has stimulated quite a response from both sets of fans on Twitter, with it fair to say that both are split about a move for the 36-year-old…
