We do enjoy a feisty transfer battle in the Football Transfer Tavern and another one could be on the cards with Metro today reporting that Liverpool and Newcastle are both chasing highly-regarded Valenciennes defender Nicolas Isimat Mirin.
The 21-year-old centre back has been winning plaudits for his fine displays in the French league and that has brought attention from the Premier League including Anfield and St James’ Park.
Liverpool’s boss Brendan Rodgers has reportedly been watching the French youngster for the majority of the season while Newcastle chief scout Graham Carr, who has a record of snapping up young French talent, is also interested in the defender.
The Metro reports that the two clubs are preparing moves for the defender with Valencinnes ready to sell for around £4 million although the two English clubs could also face competition from Mirin’s native France with Ligue 1 clubs Paris Saint Germain and Lyon also considering bids.
It is thought that the French club would let Mirin leave in the summer but any offer now would have to involve being loaned back for the rest of the season before actually moving to England.
